Overview

The BINDER BD Series CO₂ Incubators are precision-engineered, German-manufactured laboratory incubation systems designed for stable, long-term cultivation of mammalian and microbial cell lines, as well as thermal processing of heat-sensitive biological samples. Unlike forced-air incubators, the BD Series employs natural convection—eliminating shear stress on delicate monolayers and suspension cultures—while maintaining exceptional thermal homogeneity and stability across the entire chamber volume. The proprietary APT.line™ preheating chamber technology ensures uniform temperature distribution by actively preheating air before it enters the inner chamber, minimizing thermal gradients and condensation risks. These incubators operate within a precisely controlled temperature range from ambient +5 °C up to 100 °C and are engineered for continuous, unattended operation in GLP-compliant environments. While the BD Series is not a CO₂-controlled incubator (i.e., lacks integrated CO₂ sensors, gas mixing valves, or humidification), its robust thermal architecture, validated safety systems, and DIN-compliant design make it a preferred choice for applications requiring stringent temperature fidelity without gaseous atmosphere regulation—such as enzyme assays, hybridization protocols, sample acclimatization, and non-CO₂-dependent microbial propagation.

Key Features

  • APT.line™ preheating chamber technology delivering <±0.3 °C temperature uniformity (measured at 37 °C, empty chamber, per VDI/VDE 2638)
  • Natural convection airflow—no internal fans—to preserve cell monolayer integrity and prevent desiccation artifacts
  • Dual-door system featuring a tightly sealed, double-glazed inner door with anti-fog coating and external stainless-steel outer door
  • DS digital controller with intuitive menu navigation, 0.1 °C temperature resolution, and programmable 99-hour timer
  • Independent, certified Class 3.1 overtemperature safety device (DIN 12880) with audible/visual alarm and automatic power cutoff
  • Adjustable 50 mm rear ventilation port with manual damper for fine-tuned atmospheric exchange control
  • RS422 serial interface enabling remote monitoring, data logging, and firmware updates via BINDER’s APT-COM software suite
  • Factory-calibrated and supplied with individual test report verifying thermal performance, safety function verification, and mechanical integrity

Sample Compatibility & Compliance

The BD Series accommodates standard SBS-format multiwell plates (6–384-well), Petri dishes, flasks (T25–T225), and custom glassware up to 120 mm height (depending on model). All interior surfaces are electropolished stainless steel (AISI 304), resistant to common disinfectants including 70% ethanol, 1% Virkon®, and 0.5% sodium hypochlorite. Units comply with IEC 61010-1 (Safety Requirements for Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control, and Laboratory Use), EN 61326-1 (EMC for Laboratory Instruments), and carry CE marking. The independent temperature safety device meets DIN 12880 Class 3.1 requirements for laboratory incubators. Though not certified for ISO 13485 or FDA 21 CFR Part 11 out-of-the-box, audit-ready documentation—including calibration certificates, test reports, and maintenance logs—is fully supported through APT-COM’s optional electronic record module (requires configuration under GxP validation protocols).

Software & Data Management

APT-COM software (Windows-based, v3.0+) provides bidirectional communication via RS422 for real-time parameter monitoring, event logging, and alarm history export (CSV/Excel). It supports user-defined profiles, password-protected access levels (Operator, Supervisor, Administrator), and time-stamped audit trails compliant with ALCOA+ principles when deployed in validated environments. Data export includes temperature setpoint, actual chamber temperature, timer status, safety device activation events, and door-open duration. Optional APT-COM Connect enables integration into centralized Lab Information Management Systems (LIMS) via OPC UA or MQTT protocols. All firmware updates are digitally signed and delivered through BINDER’s secure support portal.

Applications

  • Long-duration cell culture conditioning prior to transfection or passaging
  • Thermal stability testing of diagnostic reagents and monoclonal antibodies
  • Controlled drying of tissue sections and histological specimens
  • Incubation of environmental microbiology samples (e.g., coliform enumeration, BOD incubation)
  • Pre-warming of media, buffers, and enzymatic reaction mixtures
  • Stability studies under accelerated temperature conditions (ICH Q1A)
  • Hybridization ovens for Southern/Northern blotting protocols
  • Storage and equilibration of temperature-sensitive standards and reference materials

FAQ

Is the BD Series suitable for CO₂-dependent cell culture?
No. The BD Series is a temperature-controlled incubator only; it does not regulate CO₂ concentration, humidity, or O₂ levels. For CO₂-dependent mammalian cell culture, consider BINDER’s CB series or C150/C415 models.
Can I validate temperature uniformity and accuracy in-house?
Yes. Each unit ships with a traceable BINDER test report. Users may perform IQ/OQ using calibrated PT100 probes and follow VDI/VDE 2638 guidelines. APT-COM supports automated mapping routines when paired with compatible data loggers.
What is the maximum load capacity for stacked units?
Only BD 23, BD 53, and BD 115 models are stackable. Stacking requires optional stacking kits (Art. No. 1101-0120) and must be performed on level, load-rated flooring per DIN 1055-3.
Does the BD Series support 21 CFR Part 11 compliance?
Out-of-the-box, no—but full Part 11 functionality (electronic signatures, audit trail, role-based access) is achievable through APT-COM Connect deployment under a formal validation protocol conducted by qualified personnel.
Are replacement shelves and accessories available separately?
Yes. BINDER offers perforated stainless-steel shelves (Art. No. 1101-0050), solid shelves (1101-0051), shelf dividers (1101-0052), and humidity trays (1101-0060) with lead times under 2 weeks from European distribution centers.
