Overview

The JB-321 Steering Force and Steering Angle Tester is an embedded, portable instrumentation system engineered for quantitative evaluation of steering dynamics in passenger vehicles, commercial trucks, construction machinery, and agricultural equipment. Built around a 32-bit ARM Cortex-M microcontroller architecture, the device implements real-time signal acquisition from dual high-fidelity transducers: a precision MEMS-based gyroscope for angular displacement tracking and a calibrated strain-gauge force sensor for tangential torque-derived force measurement. Unlike optical or potentiometric angle encoders, the integrated gyroscopic sensing module enables continuous, contactless measurement of absolute rotation without mechanical slippage or zero-drift accumulation—critical for capturing free-play (free rotation angle), breakaway torque, and steady-state steering effort across full multi-turn maneuvers (up to ±1080°). The system operates autonomously via its internal rechargeable Ni-MH battery, eliminating dependency on vehicle power systems during static or rolling road testing.

Key Features

  • Embedded 32-bit Cortex-M processor enabling deterministic sampling at ≥1 kHz for synchronized force-angle time-series capture
  • Integrated MEMS gyroscope and calibrated load cell—both factory-trimmed and temperature-compensated for repeatable field deployment
  • Dot-matrix monochrome LCD with native Chinese character support for intuitive menu navigation and on-device result review
  • Onboard non-volatile memory storing up to 100 complete test sessions, each including timestamp, vehicle ID (license plate entry supported), and raw parameter arrays
  • Standard DB9 RS232 interface compliant with EIA/TIA-232-F specifications—enabling direct connection to thermal printers, PLCs, or host PCs for automated data logging
  • Compact, ruggedized enclosure (1.5 kg total mass) with retractable height-adjustable mounting stand for rapid installation on steering wheels ranging from 33 cm to 56 cm in diameter
  • No external calibration tools required; factory calibration certificates traceable to CNAS-accredited metrology labs are provided with each unit

Sample Compatibility & Compliance

The JB-321 is validated for use on mechanically coupled steering systems where the steering column remains rigidly connected to the wheel hub during measurement. It is not intended for steer-by-wire or active front steering (AFS) architectures without hardware-level torque bypass. The instrument meets electromagnetic compatibility requirements per GB/T 18655–2018 (equivalent to CISPR 25:2016) and environmental robustness per GB/T 2423.1–2008 (IEC 60068-2-1) for operational storage at −10 °C to +50 °C. Test procedures align with national standards GB/T 18488.1–2015 (electric drive systems), QC/T 480–2021 (steering system performance), and referenced clauses of ISO 7400:2011 (road vehicles — steering system test methods). While not FDA- or ISO 13485-certified, its data output structure supports integration into GLP-compliant automotive quality management systems when paired with validated PC-based analysis software.

Software & Data Management

Data export occurs via ASCII-formatted RS232 packets containing comma-separated fields: test ID, date/time stamp, license plate (if entered), max/min/avg steering force (N), peak free-play angle (°), total angular displacement (°), and pass/fail flag based on user-defined thresholds. No proprietary drivers are required—standard terminal emulators (e.g., PuTTY, Tera Term) or custom LabVIEW/Python scripts can ingest and parse streams. Optional Windows-based desktop software (Jiubin DataLink v2.1) provides waveform visualization, statistical summary (Cp/Cpk calculation), PDF report generation, and CSV export compatible with Minitab or JMP. Audit trails—including operator ID, firmware version, and calibration expiry—are embedded in exported metadata to support internal quality audits.

Applications

  • Production line end-of-line (EOL) verification of steering assist calibration consistency across vehicle platforms
  • Post-repair validation after rack-and-pinion replacement, power steering pump service, or column bearing adjustment
  • Periodic maintenance screening in fleet depots to detect progressive wear in tie rods, idler arms, or steering gear backlash
  • R&D characterization of steering feel metrics—including on-center sensitivity, friction hysteresis, and returnability—as input to HIL simulation models
  • Technical training labs for vocational education programs accredited under China’s Automotive Vocational Skills Certification Framework

FAQ

Does the JB-321 require periodic recalibration?
Yes. Annual recalibration against traceable torque and angular standards is recommended. Field verification using known-angle fixtures and certified dead-weight loads can be performed quarterly.
Can the device measure steering torque directly?
No. It measures tangential force applied at the rim; torque must be calculated externally as F × r (where r = effective lever arm, derived from measured wheel diameter).
Is Bluetooth or USB connectivity available?
Not natively. Only RS232 is supported. USB-to-serial adapters may be used, but are not supplied or validated by Jiubin Instruments.
What happens if the battery depletes mid-test?
The system saves the current dataset to non-volatile memory before shutdown. All prior stored records remain intact.
Is firmware upgrade capability supported?
Yes—via RS232 using Jiubin’s authorized Flash Utility. Upgrades require password authentication and are issued only to registered end users under valid support contracts.
