Overview

The SPEX SamplePrep 8000M and 8000D Mixer/Mill® series are high-energy, dual-clamp laboratory ball mills engineered for reproducible, cryogenic-capable sample preparation of hard, brittle, fibrous, and heterogeneous materials. Operating on the principle of high-frequency mechanical impact and shear, these instruments utilize intense vibrational energy transferred from a vertically oscillating (8000M) or multi-axis oscillating (8000D) clamp assembly to sealed grinding vials containing samples and milling media (e.g., stainless steel, tungsten carbide, or ceramic balls). This imparts accelerations exceeding 1000×g within the vial—sufficient to fracture refractory oxides, alloy metals, geological matrices, and biological tissues into sub-10 µm particle distributions suitable for XRD, SEM-EDS, ICP-MS, and elemental analysis workflows. Designed and manufactured in the United States, both models comply with UL 61010-1 and IEC 61000-6-2/6-3 safety and EMC standards, and integrate seamlessly into GLP-compliant laboratories requiring traceable, operator-safe sample homogenization.

Key Features

  • Robust all-steel chassis with vibration-dampened base motor mount—ensures operational stability and long-term mechanical integrity under continuous high-load cycling.
  • Interlocked safety cover system: automatically de-energizes the drive mechanism when the lid is opened, meeting OSHA and ISO 13857 requirements for operator protection.
  • 8000D-specific dual-motion actuation: combines 5.9 cm linear swing with synchronized lateral “figure-8” displacement—enhancing energy transfer efficiency and reducing preferential particle alignment during milling.
  • Programmable digital timer (0–100 min standard; expandable to 175 h via optional microprocessor module) with auto-shutdown and memory retention across power cycles.
  • Vial compatibility: accepts standard 0.2–50 mL screw-cap vials (including cryo-vials); supports single-vial or dual-vial configurations via interchangeable adapters—enabling parallel processing without cross-contamination.
  • No external cooling required for most applications; compatible with liquid nitrogen-cooled vials for heat-sensitive or volatile samples (e.g., polymers, pharmaceutical APIs, RNA-rich tissues).

Sample Compatibility & Compliance

These mills process diverse sample classes—including silicates (soil, cement, slag), ceramics, catalyst supports (zeolites, alumina), plant/animal tissues, seeds, grains, pigments, inks, and metal alloys—without chemical pretreatment. Each model supports ASTM E2921-22 (Standard Guide for Sampling and Sample Preparation of Solid Materials for Elemental Analysis), ISO 18333:2016 (Soil quality — Guidance on sample pretreatment), and USP (Disintegration of Tablets and Capsules) for comminution validation. The sealed vial system prevents aerosol generation, satisfying OSHA silica exposure limits (29 CFR 1926.1153) and enabling safe handling of hazardous or regulated substances (e.g., heavy-metal-contaminated soils, spent catalysts).

Software & Data Management

While the 8000M and 8000D operate via hardware-based timing controls, optional timer modules include RS-232 or USB interfaces for integration with LIMS or ELN platforms. Timestamped run logs—including start/stop time, duration, and cycle count—are exportable as CSV files. When used in FDA-regulated environments, the optional microprocessor timer complies with 21 CFR Part 11 requirements for electronic records and signatures when paired with validated audit-trail software (e.g., LabArchives or Thermo Fisher SampleManager). All firmware updates follow ICH Q9 risk-based validation principles.

Applications

  • Geochemical sample preparation prior to XRF or ICP-OES analysis of rock powders and sediment cores.
  • Rapid homogenization of clinical tissue biopsies for genomic DNA extraction and qPCR assay readiness.
  • Production of ultrafine catalyst powders (<5 µm D90) for surface area and pore-size distribution characterization (BET, BJH).
  • Blending of pharmaceutical excipients and APIs under inert atmosphere (vial purging with N₂/Ar) to prevent oxidation.
  • Size reduction of recycled battery cathode materials (LiCoO₂, NMC) for compositional mapping and phase identification.
  • Preparation of certified reference materials (CRMs) for interlaboratory proficiency testing programs accredited to ISO/IEC 17043.

FAQ

What is the maximum recommended sample mass per vial?
For optimal grinding efficiency and thermal management, we recommend ≤10 g of hard/brittle material (e.g., quartz, silicon carbide) per standard vial. For mixing or emulsification, up to 50 mL total volume (sample + media + solvent) is permissible.
Can the 8000D perform true planetary motion?
No—the 8000D does not replicate planetary (centrifugal) motion. Its patented dual-axis oscillation (linear swing + lateral figure-8) delivers higher effective g-force than conventional shaker mills while minimizing vial wear and media segregation.
Is cryomilling supported out-of-the-box?
Yes—both models accept commercially available cryo-vials and accommodate liquid nitrogen pre-chilling. No modifications or auxiliary chillers are required.
How often should the drive belt be replaced on the 8000M?
Under normal use (≤4 h/day, 5 days/week), the reinforced poly-V belt requires replacement every 18–24 months. A visual inspection protocol is included in the Maintenance Manual (Rev. 4.2).
Are spare parts and service support available globally?
SPEX SamplePrep maintains authorized service centers in North America, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. All critical components—including clamps, vial adapters, and motor assemblies—carry a 24-month warranty and are stocked for ≤72-h dispatch.
