Overview

The X-Rite Capsure Color Difference Meter is a handheld, high-precision optical instrument engineered for rapid, repeatable color assessment in industrial quality control, design validation, and production environments. Operating on the standardized 0°/45° illumination/viewing geometry—compliant with ISO 5-4, CIE 15, and ASTM E308—it eliminates specular reflectance interference and delivers measurement stability across textured, glossy, or matte surfaces. Unlike spectrophotometers with complex calibration routines, the Capsure employs a fixed-spectrum LED-based optical path with factory-calibrated tristimulus sensors, enabling direct CIELAB (L*a*b*) and ΔE00 computation without requiring PC tethering. Its compact form factor and lightweight architecture (170 g including battery) make it suitable for extended field use, inline inspection stations, and cross-functional team handoffs—particularly where portability, speed, and PANTONE®-referenced decision-making are critical.

Key Features

  • Integrated 0°/45° optical geometry ensures compliance with international color measurement standards for surface color evaluation.
  • On-device color harmony guidance displays complementary, analogous, and triadic relationships relative to captured samples—supporting rapid visual matching without external software.
  • 1.75-inch high-resolution color LCD provides clear contrast and intuitive navigation under varied ambient lighting conditions.
  • Internal memory stores up to 100 color measurements with automatic timestamping (date + time), supporting traceability in GLP-aligned workflows.
  • Seamless synchronization with the PANTONE PLUS Series libraries enables real-time identification of closest matches from over 10,000 standardized solid colors.
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery delivers >6 hours of continuous operation; USB-C charging supports hot-swap readiness in multi-shift facilities.
  • Direct export capability to Adobe Creative Cloud applications—including Photoshop®, Illustrator®, and QuarkXPress®—via X-Rite Color Assistant software (Windows/macOS).

Sample Compatibility & Compliance

The Capsure accommodates flat, curved, and moderately textured substrates—including plastics, coated metals, textiles, paper, and painted finishes—provided surface curvature radius exceeds 25 mm and gloss level remains below 70 GU (60°). It is not intended for translucent, fluorescent, or retroreflective materials. Device firmware adheres to ISO/IEC 17025 traceability requirements for color measurement instrumentation, with factory calibration certificates traceable to NIST standards. While not FDA 21 CFR Part 11–certified as a standalone system, audit logs generated via X-Rite Color Assistant support GMP documentation practices when used in regulated manufacturing settings (e.g., packaging QC for pharmaceuticals or cosmetics).

Software & Data Management

Color data acquisition and reporting are managed through X-Rite Color Assistant—a free desktop application supporting Windows 10/11 and macOS 12+. The software enables batch comparison against user-defined tolerances (ΔE00, ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*), generates PDF reports with embedded spectral plots and pass/fail annotations, and exports CSV/Excel files for integration into LIMS or ERP systems. All device-stored measurements sync bi-directionally, preserving timestamps and PANTONE® match confidence scores. For enterprise deployment, X-Rite offers optional Color iMatch™ integration modules that extend Capsure data into formulation and spectral prediction workflows.

Applications

  • Quality assurance in automotive interior trim and exterior paint verification.
  • Textile dye lot consistency checks across global supply chains.
  • Packaging prepress and print shop color approval prior to press runs.
  • Consumer electronics housing color matching during injection molding validation.
  • Architectural coatings specification verification at job sites.
  • Educational labs teaching color theory, material science, and metrology fundamentals.

FAQ

Does the Capsure require annual recalibration?
No—Capsure is factory-calibrated and designed for long-term stability. Users should perform daily white tile verification using the included calibration standard; full recalibration is recommended only after physical impact or exposure to extreme temperature/humidity cycles.
Can it measure metallic or pearlescent finishes?
No. The 0°/45° geometry does not capture goniochromatic effects. For effect pigments, X-Rite recommends the MA98 or RM200QC multi-angle instruments.
Is Bluetooth connectivity supported?
No—Capsure uses USB-C for data transfer and charging only. Wireless functionality is omitted to maintain measurement integrity and reduce electromagnetic interference in industrial settings.
What PANTONE® libraries are included by default?
Capsure ships with PANTONE PLUS Solid Coated, Solid Uncoated, and Pastel & Neons libraries. Metallics and TCX textiles require separate license activation via X-Rite’s website.
How is measurement repeatability quantified?
Under controlled conditions (23°C ±2°C, 50% RH), the instrument achieves ΔE00 repeatability ≤0.15 for consecutive readings on a stable white tile (n=10, 10-mm aperture).
