Overview

The IKA M20 Universal Grinder is a high-performance, benchtop laboratory grinder engineered for reproducible dry comminution of hard and brittle materials. Based on high-speed rotor-stator impact grinding mechanics, the M20 delivers consistent particle size reduction through controlled mechanical energy transfer—without thermal degradation or contamination risks associated with wet milling. Its core architecture features a precision-balanced motor driving interchangeable grinding heads at up to 20,000 rpm, generating a tip speed of 72 m/s to ensure efficient fragmentation of samples such as minerals, ceramics, pharmaceutical tablets, dried plant tissues, and polymer granules. Designed and manufactured in Staufen, Germany, the M20 complies with IEC 61000 electromagnetic compatibility standards and meets DIN EN 60529 IP21 protection requirements for limited ingress resistance against vertically falling solids.

Key Features

  • Dual-chamber configuration: Two detachable stainless steel (AISI 304) grinding chambers can be alternately mounted on a single motor shaft—enabling rapid sample changeover without cross-contamination or tool recalibration.
  • Jacketed grinding chamber: Integrated cooling jacket allows continuous circulation of chilled water via standard hose barb fittings, maintaining sample temperature stability during extended operation and minimizing heat-induced phase transitions or volatile loss.
  • Robust thermal management: Combined with a 7-minute active grinding / 10-minute cooldown duty cycle and built-in current-limiting overload protection, the system prevents motor overheating and ensures long-term operational reliability.
  • Hygienic and service-friendly design: All wetted parts—including chamber, lid, and fixed cutting head (M21)—are constructed from electropolished AISI 304 stainless steel; fully disassemblable without tools for manual cleaning, visual inspection, or residue verification per GLP protocols.
  • Precision-engineered rotor-stator geometry: The pre-installed M21 grinding head features optimized blade clearance and radial impact zones to achieve sub-10 µm final particle size distributions (d90 < 0.01 mm) in validated dry applications.

Sample Compatibility & Compliance

The M20 is validated for dry grinding only and is unsuitable for fibrous, elastic, oily, or thermolabile substances. It accommodates feed particles up to 6–7 mm in maximum dimension and processes batches up to 250 mL volume per cycle. Its construction and operational parameters align with ISO 17025 laboratory competence requirements for equipment qualification, and its stainless steel contact surfaces comply with USP and EU GMP Annex 15 guidance on material compatibility for non-sterile pharmaceutical processing equipment. While not intrinsically rated for explosive atmospheres, the IP21 enclosure provides basic operator protection against accidental contact with moving parts under normal laboratory conditions.

Software & Data Management

The IKA M20 operates as a stand-alone mechanical instrument with no embedded microprocessor or digital interface. All operational parameters—including runtime, motor load status, and thermal behavior—are monitored manually by the user. For regulated environments requiring audit trails, laboratories may integrate the M20 into electronic lab notebook (ELN) workflows using external time-stamped log entries, batch-specific SOP references, and post-grinding sieve analysis reports. Documentation of maintenance, calibration (e.g., torque verification of chamber clamping), and cleaning records supports FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliance when maintained within a validated document management system.

Applications

  • Preparation of homogeneous powders for X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis
  • Size reduction of reference standards and certified reference materials (CRMs) prior to elemental assay
  • Homogenization of brittle excipients and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in early-stage formulation development
  • Routine grinding of geological core samples, refractory oxides, and sintered ceramic fragments for SEM-EDS characterization
  • Particle size conditioning of dried botanical extracts for HPLC method development and dissolution testing

FAQ

Can the IKA M20 be used for cryogenic grinding?
No—the M20 is not designed for liquid nitrogen or dry ice integration. Its jacketed chamber supports only ambient or chilled water circulation (5–25 °C). Cryogenic embrittlement requires specialized equipment with LN₂-compatible seals and thermal shock-resistant housings.
Is the M21 grinding head the only compatible head?
Yes—the M20 is mechanically configured exclusively for the M21 fixed-head assembly. Interchangeable heads (e.g., M22, M23) are incompatible due to differing shaft coupling geometry and power transmission limits.
Does the M20 meet FDA or CE regulatory requirements?
The device carries CE marking per Directive 2014/30/EU (EMC) and 2014/35/EU (LVD), and conforms to EN 61000-6-2/6-3. It is not classified as a medical device or in vitro diagnostic product and therefore falls outside FDA 510(k) or IVDR scope.
What validation documentation is supplied?
IKA provides a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) certificate confirming mechanical performance, material traceability (AISI 304 mill test report), and electrical safety verification. IQ/OQ protocol templates are available upon request for user-led qualification.
